Yielding results for local farmers

Our commitment to local farms is deeply rooted

Here’s some food for thought: We have pledged to sell $1 billion in food sourced from one million small- and medium-sized farmers worldwide. Not only will this allow us to bring locally sourced and fresher produce to our stores in the communities close to where it is grown, but it will also help us improve farmers’ incomes by 10 to 15 percent. As of today, locally grown fruits and vegetables represent more than 10 percent of all produce sold in our U.S. stores.

Tell us your thoughts on what else can be done to help these farmers around the world.

1,000,000,000 divided by 1,000,000, = $1,000. This is not job or life sustaining to anyone in the U.S. When we get the numbers of goods and produce sold to individuals in our country produced or grown in our country up to 75% or more then we have made progress.

Thanks for your comment. Over the last year, we have increased the amount of locally grown produce we sell by 97 percent, and it now accounts for more than 10 percent of all produce sold in our U.S. stores. We define locally grown as “grown and sold” in the same state. We are pursuing a goal, set in 2010, to double the amount of locally grown produce we sell in the U.S. by the end of 2015. We remain deeply committed to our sustainability goals. Keep checking the blog for more updates on our progress.
