Ideas for protecting the environment – from the great outdoors to your own backyard

WIW Word Cloud

Did you know that there are roughly 8.7 million species on the planet today? And that of those, as many as 80 percent have yet to be discovered! It’s amazing to think of all the diverse places where creatures live – from the depths of the ocean to the highest mountains.

The list of animals that captures our imaginations – such as polar bears, pandas, tigers, gorillas and elephants – barely begins to scratch the surface of biodiversity on Earth. But these animals, like many others, increasingly face changes to their habitats and need our help.

That’s why The Green Room and Mother Nature Network were so excited to be joined by World Wildlife Fund (WWF) for our last #WinItWednesday contest for Earth Month. We asked all of our fans on Twitter to answer this question: What are you doing to help protect nature and habitats?

As a special prize, WWF offered to contribute a symbolic adoption of a tiger to each of the top three finalists! That was in addition to a $100 Walmart gift card and chance to be featured on Mother Nature Network.

The answers poured in and we were delighted to see the great ideas from our readers and followers on Twitter. In the end, The Green Room and Mother Nature Network voted on the top three:

@kdillon – We practice ‘leave no trace’ hiking and camping to protect nature and habitats!

@momof4fromcle – in my garden, I pull weeds rather than using harsh herbicides and in the community we hold a school Arbor Day

@csos737 – We pick up debris on the beaches so it doesn’t wash into the water and harm the fish. Also, we have birdhouses

Congratulations to these winners and thanks to everyone who participated! If you want to share your ideas, we’re always listening. And if you’re looking for a great gift idea for Mother’s Day, consider a symbolic adoption of your own!
