Bill Simon, president and CEO of Walmart U.S., recently participated in a panel discussion at the Clinton Global Initiative in Chicago. President Bill Clinton has long been a supporter of Walmart and has praised our work in solar energy and other sustainability efforts. This panel discussion focused on the idea of shared value, and Bill Simon talked about finding the balance between what’s good for the environment and what is good for business. In fact, he shared how Walmart tried to sell some products that were good for the environment, but didn’t resonate with customers. The most important thing, he said, is finding that intersection.
Another thing he addressed was Walmart’s commitment to military veterans and families, specifically the pledge to hire any honorably discharged veteran within the first 12 months off active duty as part of our global responsibility efforts. We project that we will hire more than 100,000 veterans over the next five years.
