Green behavior around the globe
Preserving the environment seems like a topic with universal interest. But having an interest doesn’t always mean we’re willing to change our behaviors. If you’ve ever wondered about someone else’s attitudes toward sustainability, you should check out National Geographic’s Greendex.

Soaking up the power of rain
Summer is an ideal time for those with a green thumb, but as homeowners and gardeners know, some plants need a lot of water. In fact, landscaping can account for up to a third of residential water use. By some estimates, up to half of the water used for business and homes is wasted due to water inefficiencies in outdoor landscapes. Continue reading

Elevating wind power in Red Bluff
In Red Bluff, Calif., a Walmart distribution center will soon be distributing more than just products. Today, Forbes reported that a 265-foot-high wind turbine is being completed on the site. According to the story, the 1-megawatt General Electric turbine will supply between 15 and 20 percent of the center’s electricity and is the next step in our ultimate goal to be powered 100 percent by renewable energy.

August 3 is National Watermelon Day
There are few other tastes just right for the sweltering summer heat than the fresh bite of a watermelon slice. Made up of 92 percent water, watermelons are not only ideal for a hot day, but their multitude of health benefits make them an important part of a healthy diet. Through our partnership with Tuskegee University, local, small farmers are expected to supply our stores in the Southern region with 250,000 watermelons this year. With programs like this one, we’re helping our customers have access to a wider variety of fresher, locally grown produce and collaborating with farmers to sell more of their products and benefit their businesses.
Celebrate National Watermelon Day by following these easy steps to choosing the perfect watermelon.

A Walmart store reinvented
Sustainability may be rooted in math and science, but there is always plenty of room for creativity. We’re always looking for new ways to reuse, recycle and rethink the way we operate. So it was exciting to see how the community of McAllen, Texas, took a unique approach to reinvent a former Walmart store when we left a location to open a larger store in the area. The city turned the empty space into a public library, and not just any library — the biggest single-story one in the country. We’re inspired by how the city of McAllen reimagined our former store to help a local community.

Walmart solar in the news
Yesterday we posted news of a solar milestone – 100 stores in California powered by this technology. Currently, we have more than 150 solar projects across the U.S., and a Bloomberg story noted that Walmart is ahead of other companies on this front. But when you’ve set a goal of one day being powered 100 percent by renewable energy, there’s always room for improvement. So we continue to work toward our next step: 1,000 locations using solar power by 2020.

Leading the green team
Andrea Thomas with a farmer in Zambia
Yesterday, an interview with our own Andrea Thomas appeared in GreenBiz as part of a regular feature on women in sustainable business. As senior vice president of sustainability, Andrea oversees environmental initiatives within Walmart as well as with other organizations helping to insert such efforts into our business operations. Even though she is the leader in this area, read why she tells contributor Maya Albanese that “sustainability is really everybody’s job.”
