To save energy and money, turning off lights is an obvious way to start. But did you know that switching up your lighting can save you even more? According to the Alliance to Save Energy, lighting can account for 12 percent of a home’s energy use. To find out how much you may save – as well as what’s in a lumen – check out their cheat sheet below.

I need to save on light just was wondering I have fan lights in my apt but the energy lights or so big and ugle is there any small decor nice one to save thanks and have a nice holiday you guys
The cfl bulb are not big. They go in and look like a regular bulb
I think you’ll find that there are CFLs available for fans that are not quite so big or ugly. (I’m just not certain they carry them at Walmart.) We have ceiling fans in every room of our home, and I use the smaller versions made just for them. It’s nice not to have to replace bulbs all the time as I did with incandescent.
There are smaller CFLs designed just for ceiling fans. We have fans in every room of our home, and I switched to them a couple years ago…so far I have only had to replace one; so much different from using incandescent. (And they’re really not that ugly.)
The comparisons made are NOT accurate. They seem to suggest that cfl’s and LED’s are able to generate the same amount of savings. This is UNTRUE. LED’s save far more money as they use significantly less electricity than even CFL bulbs. 60% of the bulbs in my home are LED. The other 40% are CFL. I’m changing out the CFL’s to LED’s and gifting my CFL bulbs to friends and family. I have noticed NO change in my bill over the last three years due to being proactive in reducing consumption. Thermal barrier in the attic. Low E windows. Looking into a 7.5Kw solar array on the roof as well.
A simple way to save energy iis rearranging your furniture and plkugging in the tv in the bedroom andliving room in the outlets that turn off by switches so you can turn off the power when your not watching them, ‘Cause even when your not watching idt the tv is still using energy to just sit off. Almost like a car idling. And really, ltelevisions are thea mosat expensive thing to have.
When you buy 4 of them, they cost as much as the fan light
What have you saved if you let a LED light burn 3x’s as long as you would a traditional light bulb? My electric bill is the same, sometimes more, since installing a tankless hot water, energy efficient, heater, changing all the bulbs in house to LEDs, removing all but one LED light from ceiling fans, new energy efficient washer, dryer, and refrigerator, and installing new insullation. Wonder what it would be if the cost of fuel didn’t keep rising.
These lights are great but lights are such a small % of electricity used in oyr house. There is the fridge and freezer, water pump, heaters, stove, washer and dryer, etc… All these use much more power than lights. I lower the heat, keep doors closed, conserve water, wash and dry full loads and everything else I can think of to save and it is still very high bills each month.Maybe I will buy a windmill.
Adopt the Amish way of life is a quick way to save electricity!
Actually the biggest energy user in a home is your central a/c system. In the warmer areas of the country they can count for up to 60% of your energy consuption. I installed 2 high end a/c systems and my bill went from $450 a month to $220 a month. Yes it cost me more up front but in the long run the unit will pay for itself.
Kind of off the beaten path, We received a gov grant to improve our energy consumption on the dairy farm, we spent a considerable sum of our own money for a small dairy farm alltogether around 10 grand. Anyway we milked 180 cows and all the other farming stuff you do when you have a dairy and our energy consumption was around 2.3 cents per cow per day, that was for everything, cooling milk, heating barn water that is used in the barn and watering the cows, washing two loads of towels everyday ,and drying them recycling any and all water that could be recycled,Anyway very few people that I have showed it to or told about it were impressed and as far as I know , I don’t know not one person has used any of our ideas on the things that we did,
Problem is in mn the price is going up because we are not using enough electricity
Also anything electric you are not using if hooking it to a switch is not handy unplug the appliance. Unplug phone chargers when not in use also.
If you live in a cold climate put a pan of water outside overnight, let it freeze, and then put it in your refrigerator to cut down on your electricity use.
The chart seems to indicate that LED lights use the same energy as CFLs. LEDs are supposed to be more efficient. Other sources indicate that LEDs use roughly half as much energy as CFL and last about six times longer. An energy saving approach that has served me well over the years is to install a small efficient window unit in the bedroom. Set the central unit to turn off at night while cooling the bedroom with a 5000 BTU window unit. Much cheaper than a zone cooling system.
