African company Tiger Brands, a Massmart supplier, began using a biodegradable bag for all varieties of its Albany sliced bread in 2010. Massmart represents 14 to 18 percent of Tiger Brands’ business.

This week, nearly 200 packaging suppliers are showing their latest innovations at the 7th Annual Walmart and Sam’s Club Sustainable Packaging Exposition. Here is an example of how small changes, such as the shape of a bottle or box, can translate into a bigger environmental impact.

Partnering for packaging success

Sam’s Club worked with Cheerios to change its packaging from one large box with two bags to two smaller boxes with one bag each, allowing for a 4 percent reduction in materials.
