Partnering for packaging success

Sam’s Club worked with Cheerios to change its packaging from one large box with two bags to two smaller boxes with one bag each, allowing for a 4 percent reduction in materials. In trucking, the road to efficiency is continuous

Walmart is continuously working to improve its trucking fleet through technologies like this hybrid assist truck. Since 2007, the Walmart fleet has delivered 361 million more cases while driving 287 million fewer miles.
Delivering more while driving less: It’s a simple idea, but bringing it to life can be a bit complicated. Continue reading

Set big sustainability goals, then work at them daily
Walmart’s company-wide goal is to create zero waste. Corrugated cardboard is bundled into bales and sent to paper mills to be recycled into new paper products.Last year, Walmart U.S. kept nearly 81 percent of waste out of the landfill.
As someone who leads the drive toward sustainability every single day at work, I’ve been thinking a lot about our commitment as we wrap up Earth Month 2012. Continue reading

Urban habitats have new life through Acres for America
An egret stands on a branch in the Anacostia River in Washington, D.C.
Before Chicago was Chicago, birds, fish and wildlife knew it was a great place to call home.
The same can be said about many major American cities, where, interspersed among big buildings and busy streets, are some of the nation’s most important lands and natural resources.

In the news this week: sustainability at Walmart
We’d like to think sustainability is always a popular topic, but Earth Month definitely puts it in the spotlight. You can read more about our successes and struggles with sustainability in this story by Triple Pundit. Walmart’s size and scale is both an advantage and a disadvantage, and writer Bill Roth described the process this way in an interview with our Andrea Thomas, SVP of Sustainability: “What this means is that a lot of work goes into turning an aircraft carrier.”
Mother Nature Network also wrote this week about the progress we are making toward some of those goals, including Walmart’s 80 percent reduction in waste in 2011. But we know we can and must do more.
We are constantly working on solutions. We discussed some of them Wednesday during our Global Sustainability Milestone Meeting, which you can view as a webcast replay here.

As CEO Mike Duke says in this video from the gathering, “We have not wavered – and we will not waver – on sustainability.”

Buying and Selling Merchandise
My job is to make sure Walmart has the right merchandise on its shelves at the right price. Increasingly, that means factoring the sustainability of a product into our decision-making.
Yesterday, I was at Fortune Brainstorm Green in California to talk about how we’re using the Sustainability Index to crank up the sustainability of our products. Continue reading

Just how far along is Walmart on its sustainability journey?
Today, we release our 2012 Global Responsibility Report, Walmart’s annual update on global sustainability and social responsibility.
The report documents our progress on everything from energy, waste and water to disaster relief, diversity and giving. It also covers two initiatives we launched in 2011: healthier, affordable food and women’s global economic empowerment. Continue reading

Building a renewable energy strategy, one block at a time
Marty Gilbert walks along an installation of ground-based solar panels.
When I’m not working, I enjoy spending time with my family. The schedule at our house revolves around our two boys – Jake, 14, and Harrison, 10. In the last three years, as I’ve gotten more deeply involved in helping Walmart find ways to use renewable energy, I’ve been more aware of how what I do at work can help contribute to a better world for Jake and Harrison for years to come.
